DPMS HISTORY AND PRODUCT REVIEW
| In 2002 DPMS introduced the Long Range 308 line of rifles and which
are essentially a scaled up AR-15. Components such as the stock,
grip and trigger group are interchangeable with the AR-15 but the upper
and lower receivers are longer and wider in order to accommodate the
.308 round and its magazine. Due to the increased width, the
barrel nut is wider and so is the handguard. The magazine it uses
is patterned after the Knights Armament SR-25 magazine which was
inspired by the original 1950's era Armalite AR-10 magazine. Both magazines will work in a DPMS LR-308.
I have personally fired the LR-308 for accuracy and have found that Federal's Gold Medal Match 168 grain Boat Tail Hollow Point ammunition is the most accurate factory ammunition in this rifle. I have placed 3 shot groups in the 3/8" range and 5 shot groups in the 1/2" range at 100 yards and without a target trigger. Although using a one or two stage target trigger would have made it easier. For a gun that is hundreds less than the competition, and a company that doesn't have artificially high prices due to mismanagement, the LR-308 by DPMS is the way to go. -Matt Koenigsberg Proprietor of Kings Mountain
